Title: Trashin Fashion debuts on First Night Summary: 'Trashin Fashion' has come to Norwalk. With the aid of Irina Simeonova, co-chair of the New England Fashion+Design Assocation, young designers in area High Schools are creating trash fashion looks from recycled, inorganic and organic materials. Length: 416 Words Publication: THE HOUR Date: December 8th, 2005 ________________________________________________________________________ Trashin Fashion debuts on First Night THE HOUR December 8th, 2005 WESTPORT -- When Daniel Lanzilotta first came up with the idea for a First Night fashion show using recycled trash objects to create wearing apparel, he did so thinking this was an original idea. But a search on the Internet revealed that the country of New Zealand has been holding an annual event for the past 10 years called "Trash to Fashion?" According to the Web site, the show is the end product of an event that aims to provide its contestants with the chance to design and create costumes out of recycled, inorganic and organic materials. It's an opportunity to make something wonderful from those things that are left over and usually thrown away. The event has become New Zealand's largest recycled fashion show, drawing designers and audiences from throughout the country and internationally. It attracts participation from a variety of groups, cultures, and abilities including established and emerging designers. More than 200 designers compete in eight categories for prizes and the Supreme Award. Costumes can only be made from recycled and/or organic material. Two of the eight categories are for children and teenagers who model their own creations at the show nights. The question for Lanzilotta was how to execute a "Trashin? Fashion? Fashion Show" for First Night Westport/Weston. After meeting with Irina Simeonova, head of Fashion Design and Merchandising Program Director at Gibbs College, he found a creative partner to pursue his goal of actually bringing this to life at First Night Westport/Weston. Laura Berk, a student at Staples High School, agreed to pass out fliers in the schools about the project. The next meetings were with Dr. Elliott Landon, superintendent of schools in Westport, and Dr. Lynne Pierson, superintendent of schools in Weston. Both responded with a resounding "yes" when asked if the students in their respective schools could join with the students at Gibbs College to create trash fashion. The student teams who will be creating the trash fashion for the First Night Trashin? Fashion Show are now forming in the following schools: Bedford Middle School, Coleytown Middle School, Staples High School, Weston Middle School, and Weston High School. Awards will be given at the First Night Westport/Weston "Trashin? Fashion"Fashion Show, to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 31 at Westport Town Hall. To join a "Trashin? Fashion?" team, contact the principal in your school or call (203) 454-6699 and visit the First Night Web site at www.firstnightww.com. ________________________________________________________________________ About the DESIGN CO-OPERATIVE The NEW ENGLAND FASHION + DESIGN CO-OPERATIVE brings together the best in New England and International next-gen/emerging fashion+design and the insights and patronage of Fashion Industry insiders (i) to develop the next gen. of cultural innovators & leaders (ii) to (re)establish New England as a fashion+design center, brand and inspiration.
